A Taste of Honey at Trafalgar Studios

“It’s chaotic – a bit of love, a bit of lust and there you are. We don’t ask for life, we have it thrust upon us.”

Shelagh Delaney’s ground-breaking British classic A Taste of Honey returns to the West End for the first time in 60 years.

Directed by Bijan Sheibani (Barber Shop Chronicles) and designed by Hildegard Bechtler (Antony and Cleopatra), A Taste of Honey is a gritty depiction of working-class life in post-war Britain and an exhilarating portrayal of the vulnerabilities and strengths of the female spirit in a deprived and restless world.

Jodie Prenger (Oliver!, One Man, Two Guvnors) leads the cast as Helen in an exciting staging featuring original compositions - influenced by blues and soul music - by Benjamin Kwasi Burrell, and rearranged songs from the jazz era, performed live by an on stage three-piece band and sung by the cast.

When her mother Helen runs off with a car salesman, feisty teenager Jo takes up with Jimmie, a sailor who promises to marry her, before he heads for the seas. Art student Geof moves in and assumes the role of surrogate parent until, misguidedly, he sends for Helen and their unconventional setup unravels.

London Theatre Review: Shelagh Delaney's A Taste of Honey at Trafalgar

It would be a mistake to describe A Taste of Honey as anything other than artistic. The Trafalgar Studios production is not about plot, theatrics, or dramatic twists, and that's what makes it brilliant.

Exclusive Q&A with Jodie Prenger from A Taste of Honey

What a treat. I recently had the chance to interview Jodie Prenger who is playing Helen in A Taste of Honey, currently at the Trafalgar Studios. She has such a friendly, jokey, way about her that I was at risk of getting completely distracted and settling in for a girlie chat. Luckily, I managed to regain my focus and ask her about the play and the cast, and a bit about herself.

London Theatre Review: A Taste of Honey at Trafalgar Studios

When there is a jazz band on stage, and the atmosphere is gritty and low, you know you are in for a good time.  I headed over to Trafalgar Studios to cast my eye over A Taste of Honey, the kitchen sink drama primarily telling the tale between mother Helen (a resplendent Jodie Prenger) and daughter Jo (Gemma Dobson). Being carted from one washed up relationship and location to another, the magic is in the dialogue and chemistry between Jo and Helen, with endearing interludes from the men in their lives.
